Recently, I have experienced first hand the power of PLN’s. I had been on Twitter for some time but never really found “tweeting” to be all that powerful. I decided to give to Twitter another chance because I don’t think I gave it a chance (looking back) in the first place.
I started looking for other professionals to follow on Twitter. All of a sudden, I started gather a great number of resources from some great minds in education and technology. Thus, I had created my own PLN! I am amazed at the amount of learning I’ve done over the past two or three months just from learning from others. Thus, this is something that I want to start helping others explore and learn about. I plan to look at helping others understand the power of Twitter. I didn’t get it at first, do others?
Twitter has become a very collaborative enviornment for educators and for many others to communicate and gather ideas. By replying to others and from others replying to me, I find that I’m not alone in the world in my beliefs and that it strengthens and challenges those beliefs. Twitter also allows users to send a direct message to other Twitter users just in case you don’t want to make your message public. It also allows you to follow subjects or searches you’ve done before to go find out more information.
I’m so glad that I gave it the chance it deserved. My learning has really increased and I am better informed because of it.
If you’d like to follow me on Twitter, feel free @jer_johnson8842.
Starting to get excited for MACUL10! Looking forward to hearing about Twitter and it’s educational uses. I have been really interested recently about using social networking with educators and learning how educators are learning social networking to improve their teaching too! Here is a video to explain the basics of social networking.
Today, we’ve been immersed in some really good conversations on all the applications Google has to offer. This link is definitely helpful! http://sites.google.com/site/colettecassinelli/apps
We’ve really been focusing on Google Docs so far. We’ve looked at sharing with others, collaboration, and more! We’ve also been looking at the presentation tool/feature as well. I like that fact that you can view a presentation together and then present it together!
We also learned how to create forms to gather data! I will be using this for now on with my staff in my afterschool technology trainings/professional development opportunities! Great tool!
New average ages of social media users: Twitter –31, Facebook –33, LinkedIn– 39, MySpace–26. Hmmm, I would have guessed that wrong! I recently heard that Twitter is also expanding usage by over 2,000% in the past year. Interesting. I also heard that the City of Detroit is also one of the largest growing cities using Twitter!
