Haikus: A Student Exhibition

On March 6, 2008 we will be having our annual Literacy Night. This night will mainly focus on student’s sharing what they know and what they have learned in the area of literacy. In our classroom we will be doing an exhibition on haiku, a Japanese form of poetry.

Studying Japan is a part of the 1st grade Social Studies curriculum. We have learned some very interesting facts about Japan. We are combining Social Studes, Language Arts, and Science to create some pretty fancy haikus about nature. During literacy night students will be presenting their haikus as well as sharing what they have learned about Japan and the art of poetry writing. Please ask your student what they have learned thus far and remember to join us for Literacy Night on March 6, 2008.

January Happenings

Wow, I can’t believe that January is almost over. It seems as if this month just flew by. We were very busy in our classroom this month. We began the month by talking about New Year’s goals. The students worked very hard to think about areas in which they could improve.

This month we also took a field trip to the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. This trip was very exciting for the students. They were able to take part in many interactive exhibits. The class favorite was the bubbles. Students were able to create a large bubble while standing in the center. A very special thank you to parents & grandparents who volunteered to chaperone our trip.

The same day as our field trip we also took part in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. all school assembly. Students shared their dreams of non-violence, equality, and getting along. We also recited a short poem. The students did a fabulous job.

We have so many exciting things coming up in the next few months. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more Room 154 news.

Welcome to the Web!

I am Ms. M, a first grade teacher at Marquette Elementary School in Muskegon, Michigan. I am so excited to finally get a blog up and running. I have been wanting to create a blog for my classroom and my school. I think that blogs are such a great use of technology and have been wanting to try them out in the classroom for some time now. I want to use this blog as a way for my students to post things such as responses to stories, questions, etc. This will also serve as a tool to give parents and other staff members information about what is happening in room 154.
