I would like to know what other people are doing in their negotiations. I really like having my students come in before and after school to negotiate their way back into my class. During that negotiation we are able to discuss their behavior and what they can do differently next time. I just feel like I’m missing something in my negotiations. I feel like they go well but that I need something more.
Does anyone have any tips on what they do in negotiations with their students. I always make sure that the student knows that they went to RTC because of the choice they made in their behavior. I just feel like I’m missing something with the negotiation. Any suggestion would be great.
It sounds to me like you are doing everything correct. I’m not clear on why you feel this way, but remember that you are building relationships with the students. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor will relationships be built in a 5-10 min negotiation. You can look at it as planting seeds…hopefully they will have a better understanding of your expectations in your classroom. Sometimes it takes a little while for what has been said to “sink in” and perhaps this is what you see as the missing link. This may happen today, tomorrow or later in life (some seeds take longer to germinate) don’t give up on the process. I truely feel that it is making a difference with the students. Remember it isn’t the “fix all” there may be other solutions for the others.

I think you both hit it: building relationships is the key.
