The Emperor’s Code, book eight of the 39 Clues series, takes place in China. The Great Wall of China and Emperor Qin’s terracotta army located near the city of Xi’an, Shaanix province in China, make wonderful settings for this exciting story. Remember when I showed you the PhotoStory3 projects which featured the Great Wall of China and the terracotta soldiers? Be sure to read The Emperor’s Code by Gordon Korman.

Most kids just want to fit in. Jason Blake, an autistic twelve year old, can just be himself. Holding still, looking people in the eye when they talk and waiting are difficult for him. He has trouble deciphering the difference between what people say and what they really meant to say. But one thing Jason can do really well is write. He writes his stories on his computer and posts them on a site called Storyboard. When a girl named PhoenixBird writes a response to one of his stories, Jason’s world begins to change. Read Anything But Typical by Nora Raleigh Baskin.

Can you imagine being brave enough to protect the life of your friend? Annemarie, a young Danish girl, wonders if she has enough courage to do just that in Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It’s 1943 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Nazi soldiers are “relocating” the Jews. Annemarie’s courage is tested many times in the John Newbery Medal winner story. It seems like the perfect book for me to read in honor of the Holocaust Remembrance Day.

I just finished The 39 Clues Book Seven The Viper’s Nest by Peter Lerangis. Looks like book eight has also been published and book nine will be available in 43 days. I am wondering how many books there will be in the series.
I am now reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. Minli, the daughter of Chinese peasants, leaves home to try to change her family’s fortune. Chinese folktales and fairy tales are woven into this wonderful book. The author claims that as a child she tried to disregard her Asian heritage, but her wise parents left brand new books of Chinese fairy tales and folktales on the bookshelf. She was unable to ignore the lure of the new books and devoured the stories. I noticed on the end papers of the book that she has also written The Year of the Rat. Because I am enjoying this book so much, I’ll need to read it also.
